Shopping and Restaurants:

  • Miramar Shopping Center: (just around the corner). A large shopping centre with a wide range of shops, restaurants, a cinema and a hypermarket. Including Leroy Merlin, Decathlon, Kiwoko, Kiabi and Jysk.
  • The English Court Costa Mijas: A large department store with everything from fashion and cosmetics to electronics and household goods.
  • Local shops and restaurants in Las Lagunas: Along the Avenida de Mijas and in the surrounding streets you will find numerous smaller shops, supermarkets, tapas bars and restaurants.
  • Fuengirola Center: The centre of Fuengirola, with a wide range of shops and restaurants

Recreation and Entertainment:

  • Fuengirola River Park: A long park along the river Fuengirola, ideal for walking, cycling or picnicking. There are also playgrounds and sports facilities.
  • Bioparc Fuengirola: A zoo that focuses on replicating the animals' natural habitats. A fun and educational experience for all ages.
  • Beaches of Fuengirola: The beaches of Fuengirola (such as Playa de Fuengirola, Playa de los Boliches) are within easy reach and offer opportunities for sunbathing, swimming and water sports.
  • Sould Park Fuengirola: A small amusement park with attractions for children, located on the boulevard.
  • Aquamijas: A water park with slides and pools, perfect for a family day out (seasonal).
  • Costa del Sol Hipodrome Horse racing track just outside the 5km, but close by.

Culture and History:

  • Castillo Sohail: A historic castle on a hilltop in Fuengirola, with stunning views of the coast. Regular concerts and events. (A bit further, but well worth it).

Accessibility from Laguna Mijas

There are several bus stops in the immediate vicinity of Laguna Mijas. The bus lines that run through Las Lagunas connect the area with Fuengirola, Mijas Pueblo, and other surrounding towns.

Train Station (Cercanías):

  • Fuengirola Station (Cercanias): The nearest train station is Fuengirola station (terminus of line C-1 of the Cercanías Málaga). This station is located approximately 3-4 km from Laguna Mijas. You can easily get there by bus or by taxi (relatively short journey). The Cercanías train connects Fuengirola with Málaga city (including the airport) and other places along the coast, such as Torremolinos and Benalmádena.

Airports:

  • Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP): This is the main airport in the region and is located approximately 25-30 km from Las Lagunas de Mijas.
    • By train: The most efficient way to travel from the airport to Las Lagunas (and vice versa) is to take the Cercanías train (line C-1) from the airport to Fuengirola. From Fuengirola station, take a bus or taxi to Laguna Mijas.
    • By taxi/car: A taxi ride from the airport to Las Lagunas takes about 20-30 minutes depending on traffic. There are also car rental companies at the airport.
    • By bus: There are direct bus connections, but they are less frequent than the train.

Gibraltar International Airport (GIB) Is an alternative, but is a lot further away (about 100km).

'Costa del Golf'

It will come as no surprise that – situated in the middle of the 'Costa del Golf' – there are beautiful golf courses nearby Laguna Mijas. Here is an overview:

Golf courses nearby:

  • Mijas Golf International: This is probably the closest option. Mijas Golf has two 18-hole courses: Los Lagos and Los Olivos. Los Lagos is larger and has more water features, while Los Olivos is narrower and has more trees. Very popular and well maintained.
  • Cerrado del Águila Golf and Resort: A 9-hole course (par 35) with beautiful views of the coast and the mountains. It also has a gym, paddle tennis courts and a restaurant.
  • El Chaparral Golf Club: An 18-hole course known for its beautiful surroundings, with many pine trees and a varied landscape. It is a challenging course for all levels.
  • Santana Golf: An 18-hole championship course designed by Cabell B. Robinson. It is known for its wide fairways and strategically placed bunkers. It is set in a beautiful valley with avocado and orange trees.
  • La Cala Resort: Although a little further away (about 10-15 km), La Cala Resort is one of the largest golf resorts in Spain, with three 18-hole championship courses (Campo America, Campo Asia, Campo Europa). A fantastic option if you are looking for variety and top quality.

A little further away, but certainly also recommended are:

  • Miraflores Golf: An 18-hole course with beautiful views and a friendly atmosphere.
  • Calanova Golf Club: An 18-hole course with wide fairways and spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Torrequebrada Golf: (In Benalmádena, a little further, but still within reach). A classic course with a challenging design and a rich history.

Plenty to do for yourself or the (grand)children

In the area of Lagunas de Mijas there is plenty to do for all ages. Here is an overview of fun and child-friendly activities:

Close to Laguna Mijas (within 5 km):

  • Bioparc Fuengirola: A zoo that excels in imitating natural habitats. No traditional cages, but open spaces where animals can move more freely. Educational and fun for all ages.
  • Aquamijas: A water park with slides, swimming pools and children's pools. Perfect for a day of water fun, especially in the warmer months (seasonal).
  • Sould Park Fuengirola:  A small amusement park on the promenade of Fuengirola, with attractions such as bumper cars, a merry-go-round, trampolines and play equipment. Ideal for younger children.
  • Fuengirola River Park: An elongated park along the river, with playgrounds, walking paths and space to run and play.
  • Beaches of Fuengirola: The beaches are of course always a hit. Building sandcastles, paddling, and maybe even swimming in the sea (depending on the season). Playa de Fuengirola and Playa de los Boliches are wide and often have play equipment.
  • Minigolf Fuengirola: A fun activity for the whole family.
  • Cineplex Miramar: The cinema in the Centro Comercial Miramar also shows children's films.

A little further away (but still easily accessible by car/public transport):

  • Sea Life Benalmádena: An aquarium with sharks, rays, sea turtles and other sea creatures. Interactive exhibits and feeding demonstrations.
  • Tivoli World (Benalmádena): PLEASE NOTE: Tivoli World is currently (March 2025) closed, and it is uncertain if/when it will reopen. Please check the status if you are considering this. When open, it is a classic amusement park with rides for all ages, shows and gardens.
  • Parque de la Paloma (Benalmádena): A large and beautiful park with free-range animals (rabbits, chickens, peacocks), playgrounds, a lake and lots of greenery. A lovely place for a picnic and to relax.
  • Mariposario de Benalmádena (Butterfly Garden): A tropical butterfly garden where you can admire hundreds of butterflies from all over the world.
  • Selwo Marina (Benalmádena): A dolphinarium with dolphins, sea lions, penguins and exotic birds. Shows and educational presentations.
  • Cable Car Benalmádena (Teleférico): A cable car that takes you to the top of Mount Calamorro, with spectacular views of the coast. At the top there are hiking trails and bird of prey shows.
